THE CONFEDERACY PROJECT

dividing bar

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, most sacred right- a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize and make their own, of so much territory as they inhabit."
--- Abraham Lincoln (1848)

"Nothing fills me with deeper sadness than to see a Southern man apologizing for the defense we made of our inheritance. Our cause was so just, so sacred, that had I known all that has come to pass, had I known what was to be inflicted upon me, all that my country was to suffer, all that our posterity was to endure, I would do it all over again."
--- President Jefferson Davis, Confederate States of America

"In those wretched countries where a man cannot call his tongue his own, he can scarce call anything his own... Who ever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freedom of speech."
--- Benjamin Franklin

Third National Flag of the Confederate States of America Welcome to the Confederacy Project Website. First I feel I need to write what the Confederate States of America (CSA) was not. Thanks to the dumbed-down public schools, lying liberal press, and empty headed racists current popular thought is that the CSA and their flags only stands for racism and slavery. About 20% of Southern citizens owned slaves and the majority of them did not own more than one or two. The stereotypical large plantation owned by old racist white men wearing white linen suits sipping iced tea on the verandas was the exception, not the rule of slave ownership.

This means that 80% of Southerners were fighting for something else during the War Between The States (Not "Civil War" because the Southern States merely wanted to leave the Union) which was against the abusive and rising power of the federal government over State rights and control of private property (Sounds familiar?). Politically Correct history also ignores the fact that many free blacks and slaves furloughed to the CSA Armed Forces fought against the invading Northern forces.

Another PC myth was that slaves were mistreated, starved, and beaten. Not true, slaves were treated better than share croppers and day laborers; they were provided adequate food, shelter, clothes, and medical care. Slaves were private property and were expensive to buy and keep so they were not used for the extremely dangerous jobs such as mining, building of canals, and other such projects because the risk of loss of slaves in accidents would have an high economical impact on their owners, especially if they were injured and not able to work any more. So much for another PC myth that slaves built the infrastructure of the nation and so reparations must be paid to their descendents.

Even after the War Between The States, many freed slaves stayed with the families that formerly owned them. If you do the research on State run Confederate soldiers and widows homes in the South, you will find out that many black "body servants" loyally took care of their former masters until they died right up to the middle 20th century. When these former slaves were old and not able to work they were taken care of by the homes until they died. It is not unusual to see the graves of former masters and former slaves buried side by side in Southern cemeteries.

The following is an excerpt from Southern Heritage News & Views news server that I subscribe to: ... "The South has furnished near three-fourths of the entire exports of the country. Last year she furnished seventy-two percent of the whole...we have a tariff that protects our manufacturers from thirty to fifty persent, and enables us to consume large quantities of Southern cotton, and to compete in our whole home market with the skilled labor of Europe. This operates to compel the South to pay an indirect bounty to our skilled labor, of millions annually."
--- Daily Chicago Times, December 10, 1860

"They (the South) know that it is their import trade that draws from the people's pockets sixty or seventy millions of dollars per annum, in the shape of duties, to be expended mainly in the North, and in the protection and encouragement of Northern interest.... These are the reasons why these people do not wish the South to secede from the Union. They (the North) are enraged at the prospect of being despoiled of the rich feast upon which they have so long fed and fattened, and which they were just getting ready to enjoy with still greater gout and gusto. They are as mad as hornets because the prize slips them just as they are ready to grasp it."
--- New Orleans Daily Crescent, January 21, 1861

"...the Union must obtain full victory as essential to preserve the economy of the country. Concessions to the South would lead to a new nation founded on slavery expansion which would destroy the U.S. Economy."
--- Pamphlet No 14. "The Preservation of the Union A National Economic Necessity," The Loyal Publication Society, printed in New York, May 1863, by Wm. C. Bryant & Co. Printers

"What were the causes of the Southern independence movement in 1860? . . . Northern commercial and manufacturing interests had forced through Congress taxes that oppressed Southern planters and made Northern manufacturers rich . . . the South paid about three-quarters of all federal taxes, most of which were spent in the North."
--- Charles Adams, "For Good and Evil. The impact of taxes on the course of civilization," 1993, Madison Books, Lanham, USA, pp. 325-327

By 1860 the export tariffs and import duties ramrodded through the Northern-dominated House had reduced most large landowners (and slaveowners) in the South to bankruptcy or the brink of bankruptcy. Southerners viewed their position as much like that of the American colonists prior to the Revolution - taxation without proper representation and payment to a government from which they gained no benefit. Many Southerners referred to the war as "The Second American Revolution."

Not to say that slavery was not A cause, but it was not THE cause of the War. The image of the Confederacy as being the sole slaveholding nation in North America is false, since Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Washington, DC, entered the War as Union slave states (Maryland and DC ended slavery before the end of the War). The image of the Confederacy as being the last slaveholding nation in North America is also false, since slavery ended in the South in April, 1865, while it actively continued in former Union slaveholding states until December, 1865, some eight months later.

The image of the Union Army as a homogenous body welcoming the arrival of United States Colored Troops (USCT) is also false. When the enlistment of Black soldiers was authorized more than 260,000 Union soldiers immediately deserted. The real reason for the enlistment of the USCT was that the Union Army had run short of Irish immigrants to lead attacks and absorb the majority of casualties. The Union Army was strictly segregated with all non-whites serving in the USCT.

How were the USCT treated? Since the War conducted by the Union was not about slavery or freeing the slaves they were treated as for what they were intended - cannon fodder:

"...As usual with the enemy, they posted their negro regiments on their left and in front, where they were slain by hundreds, and upon retiring left their dead and wounded negroes uncared for, carrying off only the whites, which accounts for the fact that upon the first part of the battle-field nearly all the dead found were negroes."
--- Federal Official Records, Vol. XXXV, Chapter XLVII, pg. 341 - Report of Lieutenant M. B. Grant, C. S. Engineers, Savannah, April 27, 1864 - Battle of Ocean Pond (Olustee) - 54th Mass. present

[Reporting on the assault on Battery Wagner] "Sergeant George E. Stephens of Company B described the scene to Captain Emilio: 'Just at the very hottest moment of the struggle, a battalion or regiment charged up to the moat, halted, and did not attempt to join us, but from their position commenced to fire upon us. I was one of the men who shouted from where I stood, 'Don't fire on us. We are the Fifty-fourth.' I have heard it was a Maine Regiment .'"
--- "A Brave Black Regiment: History of the Fifty-Fourth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry," Luis F. Emilio, Boston: Boston Book Company, 1894; Reprint, Salem: Ayer Company Publishers, Inc., 1990., 93

[Regarding the Battle of the Crater] "George L. Kilmer, an officer of the Fourteenth New York Heavy Artillery, went into the crater with the first wave and reported afterward that when the USCT moved forward to charge the fort, some of white soldiers refused to follow them. Pandemonium broke out when the black soldiers could not continue the assault and started to retreat and come back into the crater. 'Some colored men came into the crater and there they found a fate worse than death in the charge . . . It has been positively asserted, that white men [Union] bayoneted blacks who fell back into the crater.'"
--- "The Sable Arm," Dudley T. Cornish, New York: Longman, Green & Co., 1956, p 274

While the assumption always seems to be that the Confederate Army was a segregated sea of lily-white Baptist faces this is far from the truth.

The unsegregated combat ranks of the Confederate Army included: 13,000 Indians (the correct term) with Cherokee Chief Stand Watie servingin command of a mixed force of Indians, Hispanics, and whites as a Brigadier General (the U.S. Army would not have a non-white general until 1941); 6500 Hispanics including the Surgeon General of the Confederate Army, the Chief of Artillery for the Departments of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, and seven other colonels; 5500 Jews including the Confederate Secretary of State (also the only Jew ever to appear on any American currency); tens of thousands of immigrants; a handful of Filipinos from Louisiana (originally brought there by the Spaniards); two Amerasian sons of Chang and Eng (the original "Siamese Twins"); and an as-yet undetermined number of Black Confederate combat soldiers documented in the Federal Official Records, Northern newspapers, and the letters and diaries of Union soldiers.

The following is only one of many proper references of Black Confederate combat soldiers:

Federal Official Records, Series I, Vol. XIV, pg. 24, second paragraph, Colonel B. C. Christ, 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, official report of May 30, 1862 regarding Confederate forces opposing him at Pocotaligo, SC.: "It is also difficult to state the force of the enemy, but it could not have been less than from 600 to 800. There were six companies of mounted riflemen, besides infantry, among which were a considerable number of colored men."

Were Blacks regularly-enlisted in the Confederate Army? In some documented cases, yes:

"Robert (Uncle Bob) Wilson, Negro veteran of the Confederate army who observed his 112th birthday last January 13, died early yesterday morning in the veterans' hospital at the Elgin State hospital...He enlisted as a private in Company H of the 16th regiment of Virginia Infantry on Oct. 9, 1862 . . ."
--- Elgin (Illinois) Daily Courier-News, Monday, April 12, 1948

This is a matter of considering first-hand documented contemporaneous historical records which show most of what is taught as "history" to be what Irish-born Confederate Major General Patrick Cleburne predicted in his January, 1864, letter which proposed the mass emancipation and enlistment of Black Southerners:

"Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late . . . It means that the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by all the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision . . . The conqueror's policy is to divide the conquered into factions and stir up animosity among them . . ."

As a personal example I can provide my own experience. In April, 1975, I was a Navy Airborne Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) flying Lockheed EP-3E Orion electronic reconnaissance aircraft out of the Philippines in support of the forces deployed in the South China Sea because of the North Vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam. It happened to fall to me that I was THE person who had to make the call to commence "Operation Frequent Wind" (the evacuation of Vietnam).

In the process of leading up to and conducting that operation I and several other EWOs on two other crews (we supplied 24 hour a day overlapping coverage for 21 days) took more than 2200 double-sided pages of handwritten notes regarding every aspect of the operation. These were turned over to Navy Intelligence shortly thereafter since their classification was "Top Secret Compartmentalized."

Six months later, after I had been working with the Vietnamese refugees on Guam, I encountered the same Navy Intel Admiral to whom I had relinquished the notes. When I asked them about their status and uselfulness he looked at me and asked, "What notes?" I reminded him that they occupied several boxes and he then put his hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes, and said slowly and clearly, "Lieutenant, I say again...what notes? Do I make myself clear?"

I can assure you that whatever you have seen or read about the evacuation of Vietnam is a lie...but I cannot tell you the truth.

History is and has been, as predicted by Cleburne, rewritten wholesale to fit the needs of the time. I have had the wonderful experience of speaking over the years with a number of Americans, Australians, Brits, Germans, Japanese, Russians, and other nationalities who survived combat service in World War II. That has definitely been helpful in gaining a greater understanding of that War in its reality.

In my own experience attending nine elementary schools, four high schools, and two colleges I can assure you that every place I went I was taught a different "history" of the Civil War which is what inspired me to undertake the study of the "Forgotten Confederates" more than ten years ago. It has been surprising, even to me, and continues to offer new surprises.

Incidentally, I lived in South Carolina at the time of the Civil War Centennial, graduated from Summerville High School and the University of South Carolina, and I lived in Corpus Christi from 1977-1979 and Austin from 1983-1994. Both of my half-Filipino sons were born in Texas.

Unlike some of the other folks who have no doubt written to you in bombastic, condemning terms I always assume that folks who write as you do are simply uninformed or misinformed from the study of the thoroughly-revised "history" taught in our schools. It has always seemed to me that starting out a conversation with "Hey, a****le" is not the way to offer information to someone and ask them to be open-minded.

Unfortunately, we as Southerners are taught that unless we apologize and flagellate ourselves for our hereditary "sins" we must perforce be unrepentant racists. It is today considered that the only "good Southerner" is one who admits his false guilt and apologizes for that which did not happen or may have happened 140+ years ago. I do neither because I know the truth, and since I was never taught racism I have never "gotten over it" nor do I need to personally apologize for what I do not have.

We invite you to visit with the 37th Texas Cavalry (Terrell's), Confederate States Army, the primary focal point on the Web for valid research and documentation of the Forgotten Confederates.

We have the largest, most visited Civil War reenactor web site. With 118 Web Awards to date it is the most honored Civil War site of any kind. While we stand firmly for history and against those who misrepresent the South and its history, we are not affiliated with any heritage or descendant groups. Our ranks include Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Native American, Jewish, biracial, and female troopers.

Through painstaking research and thorough, uncommented documentation we celebrate the courage, sacrifice, and heritage of ALL Southerners who had to make agonizing personal choices under impossible circumstances.

"The first law of the historian is that he shall never dare utter an untruth. The second is that he shall suppress nothing that is true. Moreover, there shall be no suspicion of partiality in his writing, or of malice."
--- Cicero (106-43 B.C.)

We simply ask that all act upon the facts of history. We invite your questions.

Today the United States is fast becoming two countries. One side is becoming more socialist with its control of the means and ways of production, the subordination of the individual to the state, and a large and intrusive central government that takes more of our freedoms, our wealth, and property to redistribute to those groups and individuals that the government deems worthy of or to "right" past "wrongs".

The other side is those Americans who still believe in capitalism and personal profit, limited government, and the representative republic that the founding fathers gave us. Socialism and republican self-government, both a political and economic issue, cannot exist in the same place and the same time and sooner or later the issue will have to be decided. The Confederacy Project advocates a peaceful secession of the United States to avoid a revolution with each side going its own way.

The question actually comes down to this: do you, as an individual, want to live as a free citizen in a free country or as a subject in a socialistic or fascist society?

Do you want to build your personal wealth and pay less taxes to a government that performs only those powers and duties that We The People allow them to do through the Constitution? Or do you want to become nothing more than a cash cow for a government that levies progressive taxes to "redistribute" income from whom the government considers to be "rich" to those who consider to be "poor" and supporting government programs that benefits certain "protected classes" of people?

Do you want to keep your God given rights of property ownership and raising your children as you see fit without control or interference from the state? Or do you want the state to mandate how you can control or use your property and how to raise or educate your children?

Do you believe in equal justice under law or laws such as "hate crimes" that gives special rights to perceived victims if they meet some kind of government classification making them "more equal" than other people like the liberals do and NAZIs did?

I feel we are at the point that the United States and its political institutions are too sick to fix; too many people have traded their freedoms for security and welfare from the state. Not security in the form of protection from foreign enemies and terrorists but in the form of handouts and special group privileges legislated by the main political parties in exchange for votes.

Walter Williams wrote in a recent column that Americans fed up with the way the government and American society is heading should simply move to a couple of adjourning States like Texas and Louisiana and take over the State governments by lawful means through the ballot box. When the citizens have a majority there they simply declare a Declaration of Independence and leave the Union. I have always thought that this could be accomplished bloodlessly and on friendly terms just as Dr Williams wrote. I also think that the socialist/fascists and their fellow travelers and other useful idiots would secretly welcome this to get rid of all the troublemakers who stand in their dream to create a new and better communistic society.

My scenario would be a more or less phased approach as follows:

PHASE ONE; would to identify the best region of the country that could become independent. Looking at maps and other sources, the best bet looks to me the five States of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. Each of these target States were a part of the Confederate States of America (Oklahoma being a pro-confederate Indian Territory at the time). Large parts of these States are still pretty much open and undeveloped for population expansion and do not contain large tracts of federally owned lands. A transportation map shows excellent seaports, waterways, highway, and railroad grid for internal communication, defense, and commence.

A first rate country also needs access to the ocean trade routes, a landlocked country is always at the mercy of its neighbors for access. These target States are also rich in oil and gas reserves, both on and off shore, for the creation of independent personal and national wealth which means no dependence on foreign aid. Dependence only leads to exploitation of the people and the land by other countries and international organizations, looting of natural resources, poverty, ignorance, bloody dictators, and revolutions as seen in many of the young Asian and African countries created post World War Two.

The most important thing to remember is that for the Confederacy Project to be successful, to keep it peaceful and constitutional, all the people who participate in the Confederacy Project must realize that until the final ties are cut we must still take seriously our rights and responsibilities as United States Citizens. That includes voting, paying our taxes, and obeying all laws, especially those having to do with firearms. This is not the place for racists, radical hate groups, tax resisters, or anti-government militias. We do not want to give any excuse or justification for the government to stop the movement.

PHASE TWO; would be the migration of all like-minded citizens to the target States. This is the hardest part, leaving job, friends, and families to move to an unknown part of the country. The Confederacy Project could help in this effort by working with local job recruiters and real estate brokers, even arranging swaps with those persons who want nothing to with the Confederacy Project and want to leave the target States.

PHASE THREE; For this, or any political movement to work, this revolution has to be bottom up. That is like-minded free citizens have to organize and take over, by lawful ballot, every elected office from the city council to the school boards to the county to the State and the seats in Congress. The biggest barrier at this point is to overturn State laws purposely put in place by the Democrats and Republicans to keep third parties from opposing them. The Confederacy Project will have to fight for full ballot access.

The Confederacy Project candidates will have to be honest and disclose anything in their past that could cast doubt on their integrity else the national liberal press will eat them up alive. Of course the national press will attack them with lies anyway but why give them live ammunition? Because of a hostile anti-freedom leftist press the entire movement must be open and public. That way we keep the government at bay because their legal and illegal surveillance of our activities will show that what is said in private is also said in public. We have to police ourselves and expel members that knowingly break the law and, if serious enough, inform appropriate law enforcement authorities.

The Confederacy Project should also nominate a presidential candidate who could win all the 62 Electoral College votes in the target States, 22% of the needed 273 to win. As Florida and Ohio has shown in the 2000 and 2004 elections one State can make a difference in who is president. Imagine what five or more States can do. The point is not becoming the President of the United States (it would be great if he did) but to become a power broker to the presidential candidate or political party most willing to allow the target States to peacefully secede from the United States.

PHASE FOUR; will kick in when all political power in the hands of the target States, the Governors and Legislatures would call for a constitutional convention and form the Confederate States of America. The only thing left would be the setting up of diplomatic relations with all other sovereign nations of the world and treaties with the United States to transfer property and smooth the transition to sovereign power. With the worldwide movement of minorities creating their own countries or autonomous republics this is no reason why this should be anything but a peaceful division. I also think that the liberals would secretly be happy to allow this so that they can get rid of all the unwashed "troublemakers" that keep them from their goal of a "People's Democrat Republic of the United States".
